President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach announced on Wednesday in Lausanne that “neither the word cancellation nor the word postponement was even mentioned” regarding the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, following coronavirus fears.

The status of the Games had been up in the air this week after Japan’s Olympic minister announced that the Games could be postponed amid the coronavirus outbreak.

However Bach put the doubts of the games’ millions of fans to rest when he said the organising committee “are fully committed” to the Games, which are due to begin on July 24.

“There the stage is set, all competition venues are complete. 4.5 million Olympic tickets have been sold domestically in Japan,” he added.

The IOC chief was also quizzed on whether there would be a sustainable future of the Olympic Games. “The Olympic Games will be climate positive from 2030 on,” said Bach.

The coronavirus outbreak has affected at least 79 countries worldwide, resulting in over 95,000 confirmed cases and 3,252 deaths so far. It has had a huge impact on the sporting world in recent weeks, with internationally followed events including the Chinese Grand Prix, two MotoGP races in Qatar and Thailand and multiple Italian Serie A football matches being postponed.
