Netanyahu claims victory in Israel’s third general election in under a year

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims he has won a “giant victory” in the country’s third general election in under a year.

Exit polls put him on course to win 59 seats but he’ll be short of a majority by two seats.

With 90 per cent of the vote counted Mr Netanyahu’s party won 29.3 per cent of votes compared with 26.3 per cent for Benny Gantz and his centrist Blue and White party.

Mr Netanyahu is preparing to go on trial for corruption charges later this month.
